Oracle to Acquire Sun Microsystems

Phrase of the day:

Oracle President Safra Catz was also heard to remark…
“all your database are belong to us”

Although it’s funny there’s some truth in that. Sun started supporting PostgreSQL and later on bought MySQL AB.

Oracle had already bought InnoDB but now MySQL is theirs. Hurray for forks.

I wonder what Oracle will do to MySQL. Oh and don’t forget those partnerships with Dell and HP for Oracle’s business and Sun’s partnerships with Dell, HP, Microsoft and let’s not forget IBM.

Oh IBM…IBM’s execs must be  running those numbers again looking at the bargain they let go.

Oracle just positioned itself as a one stop shop for solutions to big businesses. From the bottom hardware all the way to consulting with a new OS, DB, Middleware and all the Software solutions from continuous aquisitions in the middle, many big companies will be sending a lot of money Oracle’s way for that package. It’s a big pie. It’s IBM’s turf. See the bargain?

Time will tell what will happen to Sun’s R&D, some nice products and technologies coming out of there, to MySQL, to Oracle’s focus on Unbreakable, a RedHat Linux fork because now they own Solaris.

Interesting times we live in…

Sun buys MySQL AB

Just saw on Sun’s CEO Jonathan Schwartz blogSun to acquire MySQL AB.

Sun is building for itself a strong image as a One Stop Shop Solution Provider, with complete Hardware, Software, Integration and Support. It has been doing it for a while, just not with Open Source and not at this level.

One question crossed my mind as soon as I saw the post: what happens to Sun’s support of PostgreSQL on Solaris ?
