in Google.
Today was the first day of the Open Source event “I Fórum Software Livre” here in Portugal.
The session I was most eager to attend was Fernanda Weiden’s about Load Balancing.
She’s Brazilian by birth but works at Google in Switzerland where she’s responsible for the Load Balancing solution.
I had the chance to ask her some questions at the session and some more after and not only she’s very technical savy she’s also very pretty and friendly.
Too bad she brought her boyfriend with her :>
Honestly I was expecting some in house bred solution, but apparently Google uses standard and available open source apps for their Load Balancing solution.
I’m hoping the session slides that have specific details will be available soon so I’ll update when that happens.

in lobby.
Just read Paulo Vilela’s post about how a request by Sun and IBM to become part of the Portuguese Technical Committee established to discuss document standards in Portugal was denied. Why? There are no seats. And I do mean CHAIRS!!!
I’m ashamed of my country, again.
Note: Paulo Vilela is a Sun employe in Portugal and his post is in Portuguese, so here is the page translated to English, via Google.

in Apple and Mac.
I bought a house (again) last Friday and went to see some shops today with my girlfriend at the local mall.
We we looking for some Wok cooking books and went to Fnac, which happens to be one of Portugal’s biggest Apple retailers.
Right next to the Apple zone it’s the kids zone and what do I see in a small “kids” table with small “kids” chairs? A pair of iMacs. What really got my attention was when I saw a kid playing Solitaire. Wait, but OSX doesn’t come with Solitaire… what gives?! You guessed right, it was running Windows! I went to check the other iMac and it was also running Windows. Not running Solitaire, but with a visible Windows desktop.
Want it with a cherry on top? On the side of the iMacs there was a flyer with something like “With support from Apple IMC Portugal”.
Now, who decided to promote Macs running Windows? Fnac? IMC? Does IMC know this is happening? Does Apple know?
